Gusto

Location: Toronto, Canada
Design & Photography: Munge Leung

Revitalizing a former auto body shop, Gusto 101 crafted an industrial and intimate Italian trattoria.

The use of vintage furnishings paired with the raw, industrial space creates an industrial interior that remains warm and authentic.

I enjoy that though they used multiple finishes and fixtures, the entire space feel cohesive and complete. By leaving the existing space relatively untouched and adding a level of finish to the food preparation areas, allows the space to remain pulled together and thought through.

Terroni

Name: Terroni
Location: Toronto & LA

Terroni does a great job carry a style and vision throughout multiple locations. With two locations in Toronto and one in LA, they let their defining element; the wine, shine through.

The use of mixed materials adds a funky, unstuffy vibe to the space which is refreshing knowing their focus on wine.

The built-in shelving behind the bars at each location are simple enough to showcase the vast collection but also play to the original details of the space.

LA:

I love that the LA location took a traditional library setup and flipped it on its head by infusing an urban aesthetic paired with the modern and simple shelving.

 Toronto:

Each locations interior perfectly compliments it's structure while also providing a good dash of contrast. The intricate tray ceiling is juxtaposed by the modern light, urban art, and clean wooden booths.

Bent

Name: Bent
Location: Toronto

Located in Toronto, Bent is the perfect mix of whimsy and traditional.

Using traditional materials like subway tiles with dark grout, shaker style benches, and molded plywood chairs creates a great base to which they added a touch of the unexpected.

The colorful stripes on the tables, gilded bronze pendants, and custom industrial stools all add a sense of 'we don't take ourselves too seriously' while still coming together to create a cohesive and thoughtful design.

Parts & Labour

Name: Parts & Labour
Location: Toronto
Design: Castor Design

Located in an old hardware store, Parts & Labor serves to be an alternative to the typical watering hole offering in Toronto. harvesting ingredients from their rooftop garden and offering art installations and music in the basement, the space is part hipster, part punk-rock.

The powder-coated steel & leather spring stools line the bar while custom pendant fixtures and community tables flank the wall.

Dinners get a view into the kitchen through the glass partition.

The entry of the space features custom limestone stools and a steel host stand.

Scarpetta Dining Pavilion

New York based restaurant, Scarpetta, recently completed it's first international expansion into the city of Toronto. Wishing to create a new dining concept where guests can 'see and be seen', the dining pavilion surely accomplishes it's directives.

New York based restaurant, Scarpetta, recently completed it's first international expansion into the city of Toronto. Wishing to create a new dining concept where guests can 'see and be seen', the dining pavilion surely accomplishes it's directives.

Set alongside a park and parallel to a linear reflecting pool, the angular and narrow pergola has one central community table dominating the space.
The long table was designed to include seating ranging from standard dining, counter, and bar height spots by raising or lowering the Corian surface.

The reflective nature of the inside finishes brings the natural qualities found outside, inside and allows a harmonious space throughout. Placing the bar stations perpendicular to the direction of the space, creates a natural break and defines the spaces boundaries.
